Sports Students receives Awards
2nd cohort UWI/FIFA/CIES Post Graduate Diploma students
On 29th May the Department of Management Studies awarded UWI/FIFA/CIES Diplomas to the first and second cohort of students within its Post Graduate Sports Management Programme at a special ceremony held at the Learning Resource Centre.
1st and 2nd cohort students graduated after studying the foundations of sport management with a particular emphasis on the realities of the Caribbean region. Lectures were supplemented with special sessions from both local and international speakers.
Prof. Clement Sankat, Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal of The UWI; Dr. Hamid Ghany, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Dr. Keith Clifford, Chairman of the First Citizens Sports Foundation, stressed the vital role that sport plays in Caribbean society and the need to give qualitative support at management level. The UWI / FIFA / CIES Postgraduates have now been asked to contribute to the development of their region by investing their knowledge in sports organizations as quickly as possible.
The Department of Management Studies and the CIES would like to take this opportunity to thank Professor Clement Sankat, Dr. Hamid Ghany and Mr. Errol Simms for their unwavering support of the programme from its inception and wish every success to the many happy graduates this year: Boni Bishop, Brian-Anthony David, Andrea Francis, Shawn Garcia (Valedictorian), Seychelle Grant, Francis Haynes, Charisse Bacchus, Edmund Berahzer, Vinda Ramsingh II, Sterling Seebransingh, Winston Sobers, Nyron Thomas, Christian Medina, Mauricia Nicholson National Hockey and Football player), Elizabeth Mc Comie (Betty), Brent Phillips (Valedictorian), James Stewart, Annette Knott (V.P. Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee), John Felix, Roger Pierre and Kion Williams.
The UWI/FIFA/CIES Post Graduate Diploma commenced in January 2010 following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding the previous year at the St. Augustine Campus and caters to the needs of individuals whose undergraduate training is in areas other than sports management and desire to branch into a professional career in sports management.

The UWI through its Department of Management Studies therefore has the remit of offering the Diploma Programme to candidates within the English Speaking Caribbean. Thus far expressions of interest to participate in the programme have been received from persons and organizations from Grenada, St. Vincent, Jamaica, Antigua & Barbuda and further afield in Guatemala, Guadeloupe and Bangladesh.
