1. Register for Gate e-Service ID

Only citizens of Trinidad and Tobago can register for a GATE e-Service ID.  Click here for further details on how to register. 
 

NOTE

• You must obtain a GATE e-Service ID before applying for GATE funding
• Registration for GATE e-Service ID is not your application for GATE funding
• You must submit your application for GATE funding online using your GATE e-Service ID. Failure to do so will result in you being unable to access GATE tuition funding for the particular semester. You will be required to pay your own Tuition Fees
• Although a student’s eGATE application has been approved and their student account reflects a GATE Payment, it does not mean that funds were received by The UWI. An application can be Financed Rejected by the GATE office sometime after the student has submitted the application. In instances such as these, the student will be contacted to make arrangements to clear the unpaid balance.

2. GATE MEANS TESTING

Effective August 2020, the means test funding policy was amended as follows:

• All applications for GATE funding will include a mandatory means test. Failure to complete the means test will disqualify the application from being considered for GATE funding. 
• where the household income is below $10,000 per month, students will be eligible for 100% GATE funding for tuition fees
• where the household income is above $10,000 per month but less than $30,000 per month, students will be eligible for 75% GATE funding for tuition fees
• where the household income is above $30,000 per month but less than $75,000 per month, students will be eligible for 50% GATE funding for tuition fees
• where the household income is above $75,000 per month, students be ineligible for GATE funding

3. GATE POLICIES

Effective October 2022

1. Students enrolled in institutions and programmes accredited by the Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago be funded as follows:
1. For one (1) non-terminal programme and One (1) Bachelor’s Degree, or
2. for one (1) Diploma and One Bachelor’s Degree, or
3. for one (1) Advanced Diploma and One (1) Bachelor’s Degree, or
4. for one (1) Associate Degree and One (1) Bachelor’s Degree, or
5. for one (1) terminal qualification (certificate) programme and One (1) Bachelor’s Degree, or
6. one TVET level three (3) programme or equivalent as Diploma and one TVET level four (4) programme equivalent as Advanced Diploma, or
7. one TVET level four (4) programme equivalent as Advanced Diploma and one TVET level five (5) programme equivalent as a Bachelor’s degree, or
8. one TVET level three (3) programme equivalent as Diploma and one TVET level five (5) programme equivalent as a Bachelor’s Degree
2. that in order to matriculate upwards, students should register for the baccalaureate certification within two (2) years of completion of initial course of study.
3. The course of study should be aligned to the areas identified on the Interim Development List, as well as legacy areas associated with maintaining the cadre of professionals in the areas of Medicine, Engineering, Science and Technology, Agriculture, Law, Psychology, Social Work, the Creative Sector and Sports.

With respect to retroactivity, citizens under the age of 50 already in possession of a bridging qualification as identified above be eligible to qualify for GATE funding to complete their Baccalaureate certification once they register by September 2024.

It was also agreed that the following policies will remain in effect:

• Effective August 2020, the discontinuation of funding for postgraduate programmes
• Effective August 2020, students currently enrolled in undergraduate programmes continue to be funded for the normal duration of the programme.
• Effective August 2020, students enrolled in programmes at regional campuses of The University of the West Indies (UWI) that are offered at the UWI, St. Augustine campus, be provided equivalent level of funding at the St. Augustine campus.
• effective August 2017, only institutions and programmes accredited by the Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago (ACTT) be funded
• effective August 2017, the Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) programmes for Level III and above be funded
• effective August 2016, persons over the age of 50 years shall no longer eligible for GATE funding
• effective August 2016, GORTT shall discontinue the funding of new students in the medical programme at St. George’s University, Grenada, SGU.
