Working Title for Dissertation
Love, Caribbean Style: Romance, Gender and Power in Contemporary Caribbean Popular Romantic Fiction

Research Questions

  • How do contemporary gender relations interface with formulaic Caribbean romances crafted to reflect Western ideologies of sexuality, gender and family?
  • What writing strategies can I, as a fiction writer, utilise to create realist portrayals of contemporary Caribbean gender relations and landscape within the thematic and literary structure of the genre of popular romantic fiction?
  • How do the novels I will use as my primary research texts characterize Caribbean women’s personal and public power, especially within the romantic heterosexual relationships they present?
