Qualifications and Experience            

The successful candidate must possess:

  • An MBBS degree or equivalent from a medical school recognized by the Medical Board of Trinidad and Tobago
  • Registration as a specialist in Adult Psychiatry with the Medical Board of Trinidad and Tobago
  • At least 3 years’ experience working as a specialist in Psychiatry

Experience working in an academic environment is desirable


Special Responsibilities

  • Working with the inter-disciplinary team at the Unit, including general practitioners and psychologists
  • Providing comprehensive support, psychiatric assessments and treatment to students in an out-patient setting, whether by appointment or walk-in
  • Diagnosing common mental health conditions; prescribing evidence-based medical treatment; formulating effective treatment plans; providing follow-up care; and keeping proper records
  • Collaborating with mental health professionals in the community for continuity of care for students as needed
  • Managing disruptive and crisis situations on the Campus and referring students for hospitalization as needed
  • Being a vital member of the Health Services Unit crisis intervention team
  • Providing support to the Student Life and Development Unit through the conduct of workshops and seminars
  • Providing individual and group psychoeducational sessions
  • Assisting the University community in understanding mental health needs of students, and recognizing and making appropriate referrals
  • Participating in University Committees as needed
  • Being involved in research on student well-being, the findings of which will guide student mental health interventions

The Unit places high priority on individuals of integrity who can work well in a team and student friendly environment. Candidates should also possess good communication and interpersonal skills. A good command of both oral and written English is essential. Candidates must also:

The appointment is for the period of 3 years, in the first instance.
