This course will explore the different legal alternatives around impact investment. By understanding the key role that the law plays in impact investing, the course seeks to provide students with the opportunity to approach legal documentation, with a practical perspective, that is generally used by Development Financial Institutions (\u201cDFI\u201d) in Latin America and the Caribbean.<\/p>\nRationale:<\/strong>
Knowledge about the Development Financial Institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean is not included in the law curriculum in the law schools in the region. It is important to develop this sort of specialist knowledge and training to equip students to support the growth and facilitate access to the IDB Invest and the Inter-American Development Bank opportunities.<\/p>\nThe LLM programme already offers a menu of law courses grounded in public international law, including Advanced Public International Law which deepens knowledge and analyses across the generalised topics in the field. But there are also courses in the programme which deal with niche areas in public international law such as trade, the environment, intellectual property, human rights, and Caribbean integration. The addition of a course in Development Financial Institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean will thus broaden the range of offerings in specialised international law fields at the postgraduate level.<\/p>\n
Both the University and the Faculty envision responsiveness to the region\u2019s imperatives and to the global environment. The course covers an area which is critically important to the region\u2019s development. The course will foster scholarship and research in the field which will impact career opportunities domestically as well as in the increasingly dynamic and changing global environment. It will thus create new prospects for students both educationally and professionally.<\/p>\n
Course Aims<\/strong>
The primary aim of the course is to allow students to develop a strong foundation in the fundamentals of the legal framework governing Development Financial Institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean. The students will also be able to understand the various legal documents including loans, equity, capital markets from a development financial perspective and how that impacts development in Latin America and the Caribbean.<\/p>\nKnowledge of DFI is a specialist area and will help to prepare students for a 21st Century law career. In addition, the course is designed to encourage creative and critical thinking and strong legal analysis.<\/p>\n
Course Learning Outcomes<\/strong>
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
1. Understand the legal frameworks governing core financial transactions with an impact perspective.
2. Analyze key legal documents in loans, equity, capital markets, and project finance from the perspective of Development Financial Institutions (DFI).
3. Develop critical thinking skills for resolving legal and transactional issues.
4. Apply the principles and rules in this area of law to bridge theory with real-world practice.
