Description:<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The\u00a0PG in Oil and Gas Law is to continue the Faculty of Law\u2019s work to pioneer relevant, cutting-edge law courses that would meet the needs of forward-looking nations pursuing dynamic development.\u00a0\u00a0Oil & Gas Law is considered as one of the areas of importance to Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana. The wider Caribbean region is increasingly receptive to energy issues and thus it is envisaged that this initiative would form part of a broader effort for the UWI Faculty of Law to provide continuing legal education at the postgraduate level and to ensure that the faculty maximises its positive impact on the regional constituents that it serves. The PG in Oil and Gas Law is currently not offered by any other country in the Caribbean region. Hence\u00a0these courses will\u00a0attract not only students in Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana but also in the wider region and Latin America as well.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Course of Study<\/strong><\/p>\n

LLM<\/strong><\/p>\n

Candidates for the UWI LLM Degree must complete thirty-six (36) credit hours of the designated course of study comprised of two (2) core Oil and Gas Law twelve credit courses and any two (2) six-credit courses offered in the UWI LLM programme.\u00a0\u00a0With the exceptions noted above students can select from any courses offered in the UWI LLM programme.<\/strong><\/p>\n

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA<\/strong><\/p>\n

Candidates for the UWI LLM Degree must complete twenty-four (24) credit hours of the designated course of study comprised of the following:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Two core, two-semester courses in:
    LAW\u00a0<\/strong>6605<\/strong> \u2013 Oil and Gas Law \u2013 12 credits (2 semesters)
    <\/strong>LAW\u00a0<\/strong>6610<\/strong> \u2013 Energy Transitions and International Energy Investments \u2013 12 credits (2 semesters)
    <\/strong>OR <\/strong>One of the two core courses (LAW 6605<\/strong>or LAW\u00a06610<\/strong>), and<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    For their remaining credits, candidates in the UWI PG in Oil and Gas Law shall:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. select any two (2) six-credit courses offered in the UWI PG programme; OR<\/strong><\/li>\n
    2. select one (1) six-credit course offered in the UWI PG programme and apply to complete a Research Paper on a topic in Oil and Gas Law or on such other topic as the Faculty may permit. The Research Paper is worth six (6) credit hours.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Duration<\/h4>\n
        \n
      • A student designated as a \u2018full-time student\u2019 will be required to complete the courses within a single academic year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
          \n
        • A full-time student will be required to read for a minimum of two (2) courses and a maximum of four (4) courses in any one semester.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
            \n
          • A student designated as a \u2018part-time student\u2019 will be required to read for a minimum of one (1) course or a maximum or two (2) courses per semester.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            The summer period of the UWI has been designated as a teaching session for purposes of the UWI LLM degree and Postgraduate Diploma in Law.<\/p>\n

            Students unable to complete the full UWI LLM are eligible to receive a Postgraduate Diploma in Law upon successful completion of four courses, of six credits each.<\/p>\n

            The coursework component of all programmes must be completed within four semesters of the commencement of the programme by the student.<\/p>\n

            Students must apply for approval to register in Law 6900 Research Paper before the end of the second semester or teaching session from the commencement of the programme by the student.<\/p>\n

            *Where a student is awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Law and is accepted to pursue the LLM, they will be allowed to carry forward 12 credits from the Diploma. This means that the student will have to complete an additional 24 credits to be awarded the LLM degree.\u00a0\u00a0With the exceptions noted above students can select from any courses offered in the UWI LLM programme.<\/p>\n
