The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social & Economic Studies (SALISES) invites you to a Research Seminar Presentation delivered by Mala Jokhan, MPhil candidate, titled "Exploring Behavioural Responses to Parental Migration: Preliminary Findings for Children Left Behind in Trinidad" on Monday 23rd November, 2009 at 10 am, at the SALISES Conference Centre, UWI.
Abstract
This qualitative study explores the oral recollections of ten adults on their lived experiences of parental migration in Trinidad. Using an interpretive analytical approach, it ascertains the views of these persons on the circumstances under which they were left behind upon the migration of their parents and their impressions of how they have responded to such separation. Also, it explores the impressions of these persons to reunification and whether the propensity to migrate as parents has been passed on to them based on their prospects for family life. Regarding its implications for policy and practice, suggestions are made to individuals who are dealing with similar circumstances, parents who have migrated without their children, or are planning to do so, and to persons who these children may turn to for additional support.Open to: | Staff | Student |
