The Society of Caribbean Linguistics, in conjunction with The UWI Faculty of Humanities and Education, is hosting the SCL 18th Biennial Conference, to be held at the Amaryllis Beach Resort in Barbados. Scholars, students, educators, writers, and the general public are all encouraged to participate. Sessions include presentations, workshops, colloquia, poster sessions, and plenary addresses.
Among the key speakers are Dr. Curwen Best, Senior Lecturer in Popular Culture and Literary Studies, Department of Language, Linguistics and Literature, UWI, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados, and Professor John R. Rickford, the J.E. Wallace Sterling Professor of Linguistics and the Humanities, Stanford University, and President of the Society for Caribbean Lingusitics.
These conferences, which are held every two years, provide many informal and meaningful opportunities for linguistic discussion. This year's conference is dedicated to the memory of Richard Allsopp and, in keeping with his contribution to language and culture, it has been themed "Caribbean Languages and Popular Culture."
Specially invited guests include Professor Mervyn C. Alleyne, Professor Emeritus, UWI, Mona, Professor Silvia Kouwenberg, UWI, Mona and Professor John McWhorter, Senior Fellow, Manhattan Institute, lecturer at Columbia University.
This conference is open to all, with a special Language Teaching Workshop for teachers.
