Event Date(s): 19/01/2010 - 20/01/2010
Location: Lecture Room, Centre for Language Learning (CLL)
Professor Daniel Miller, Professor of Anthropology at the University College London, will deliver a public lecture titled “Why Blue Jeans?,” on Tuesday 19th January, 2010, at 5 pm, at the CLL Lecture Room.
Professor Miller will present a paper which comes from a "Global Denim Project," that starts with the observation that nearly half the world's population are wearing blue jeans on any given day. It employs the material culture approach from Anthropology to shed light on many topics in social science, including the way people relate their sense of the intimate and global, the relationship to host immigrant groups and the reason most people struggle to be ordinary rather than extraordinary.
Note: First Year Cultural Studies Students are invited to attend a workshop with Professor Miller on Wednesday 20th January, 2010, from 5-8pm at the CLL. These students are kindly asked to register for this session with Ms. Keisha Reid at 662-2002 Ext 3280 or via e-mail at Keisha.Reid@sta.uwi.edu.
