The University of the West Indies, Centre for Gender and Development Studies (CGDS) invites all to attend a Lunchtime Seminar entitled, “Consuming Capoeira” a presentation by Chanzo Greenidge, a Ph.D. candidate at the UWI Graduate Institute of International Relations. The presentation, part of the ongoing CGDS Lunchtime Seminar Series will take place in the CGDS Seminar Room on Wednesday 28th November, 2007 from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m.
One of the many forms of martial arts developed in the Atlantic by African migrants, Capoeira has experienced a Diaspora of its own. This seminar will reflect on the Capoeiragem in Europe, North America, the Caribbean and Brazil and question the future of black counterculture, while introducing emerging collaborative work on identity movement and territorial resistance in the Global South.
