Abstract

In this thesis, I seek to examine stock market development in the CARICOM region with specific emphasis on three countries: Barbados, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago. These countries were chosen because they are the most developed in the Caribbean. More specifically, this thesis will focus on the state of development that these three equity markets currently enjoy and the factors which have influenced and hindered its progress so far. This will be accomplished by looking at three critical aspects of stock market development that are to be examined in three separate essays, which include: (1) the general states of development of the stock markets; (2) the co-movement of stock prices among the three major CARICOM stock markets and (3) the impact of cross-listings on these three stock exchanges. The culmination of this research exercise should enable its readers to have a better understanding of the process by which one can objectively evaluate a stock market before deciding whether to invest or not. The papers will also hopefully provide guidance to policymakers in rectifying the shortcomings which are being experienced by the stock markets as well as building on its strengths.
