Location: School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) amphitheatre, Faculty of Medical Sciences

Dr. Asoke Basu, senior lecturer in Parasitology, will present a seminar titled Ticks: Important Enemies of Humans and Animals, on Wednesday 22nd September, 2010, at noon, at the School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) amphitheatre, Faculty of Medical Sciences.

Abstract

Ticks are obligatory blood sucking parasites of mammals, birds and reptiles. They surpass all other arthropods in number and the variety of diseases they transmit to domestic animals. They also rank second to mosquitoes as vectors of human diseases. Three major species of ticks [Amblyomma variegatum, A. cajennense, Rhipicephalus microplus (formerly Boophilus microplus)] cause a loss of US$62 million annually in the Caribbean’s livestock industry. At this seminar, Dr. Basu will consider the great economic importance of ticks, their distribution in Trinidad, their biology and control methods.
