In 2004 the Social Policy Programme of the Social Work Unit, Department of Behavioural Sciences, UWI, held a think tank on the integration of persons with disabilities into the education system, entitled Disability, Integration and Development – the Way Forward in Education: Unleashing Full Potential Through Full Participation. This think tank heralded the beginning of Social Disability Studies at The UWI and an academic commitment to improving the status of persons with disabilities and their integration into society. An instrumental outcome of this think tank was the formal recognition of the Disability Studies Unit on Friday 30th November, 2007, by The UWI.
The Disability Studies Unit, in collaboration with The UWI Open Campus, launches the publication of the Think Tank Conference, titled Disability, Integration and Development - the Way Forward in Education: Unleashing Full Potential Through Full Participation, on Wednesday 27th October 2010, from 6-8 pm, at the Open University Auditorium, Gordon Street, St. Augustine.
Other publications will be on display and on sale at the launch, including a special issue of Caribbean Dialogue Vol. 14 Nos. 1 & 2 – January-June 2009, entitled Nurturing a Caring Society: Creating Inclusive Societies. Copies of the publications will also be distributed to key stakeholders of the disability movement, including Non-Governmental organizations of and for persons with disabilities.
The launch will feature motivational speaker, Dr. Verleen Bobb-Dann. It is expected that beneficiaries will be further educated and empowered to effect a positive change in the lives of persons with disabilities and hence ensure a good quality of life for all.
