The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) hosts a Research Seminar Presentation by PhD Candidate, Mr. Chiedozie Osuala, on Thursday 24th November, 2011, at 1 pm, at the SALISES Conference Centre.

Abstract:

Managing the effects of climate change on coastal communities: a Caribbean perspective

The purpose of this thesis is to address the issue of climate change from the perspective of affected populations in selected coastal communities in the Caribbean. An analysis of perceptions towards climate change, the cost of sea level rise and its implications for adaptation in Georgetown, Guyana, are examined.  Additionally, the impact of community awareness and educational outreach initiatives as an adaptation strategy and its implications for the tourism industry in Bequia, St. Vincent & Grenadines are also assessed. Adaptation strategies are proposed to aid policy-makers and governments formulate community-oriented policies within the context of the socio economic, environmental and geographical attributes of the Caribbean coastal community under review.
