The Department of Creative and Festival Arts (DCFA), Faculty of Humanities and Education, The University of the West Indies (UWI) is celebrating its 25th Anniversary and will be hosting its annual student concert Music of the Diaspora on Saturday 28th April 2012, at 6:00 p.m., at Daaga Auditorium, UWI, St. Augustine.
Music of the Diaspora will feature performances from the Indian Classical Ensemble, UWI Caribbean Contemporary Workshop and UWI Intermediate Pan Ensemble, which comprise students pursuing a BA in Musical Arts and a Certificate in Music at DCFA. The Indian Classical Ensemble’s theme is a Bollywood medley comprising music from several popular Bollywood movies. The aim is to enable students to perform Indian music on Western and Indian musical instruments. The performance will also give students the opportunity to work in small groups and express their musical skills. The audience will be treated to a new musical experience.
The UWI Caribbean Contemporary Workshop’s performance will feature a dynamic mix of Classic, Jazz, Latin, Reggae and calypso, including a very dramatic classical composition composed by Trevor Sharpe. This composition will feature the brilliance, the pomp and ceremony by the Brass section, which is contrasted with the slow and mellow mood of the Woodwind section of the orchestra. The UWI Intermediate Pan Ensemble is a performance-based ensemble designed to expose students at DCFA to various musical genres, including Calypso, Pop, Reggae, Bossa Nova and light Classics.
All are invited to attend this unique and dynamic concert. For additional information kindly contact DCFA at 663-2141 or email Josette.Surrey-Lezama@sta.uwi.edu
