UWI’s School of Veterinary Medicine hosts a seminar by Dr. Wouter van Hoven, Professor in Wildlife Management, University of Pretoria, South Africa, on Monday 15th October, 2012, at noon, at the SVM Amphitheatre, Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Champs Fleurs.

Dr. van Hoven’s  seminar is titled “The Future of Wildlife Conservation in Africa and the Importance of Veterinary Services”.

Abstract

The threats to wildlife and the decline in numbers of most species on the African continent is discussed. We look at key species such as Rhinoceros, Elephants, Lions and many species of antelope to demonstrate why a pragmatic business approach is the only way at this point to save these species.  Veterinary services have an important role in the pragmatic conservation approach in Africa today. Information will also be given about the Ecolife Expeditions/Course (8 credits, 3 weeks, Vets-in-the-Wild, University of Pretoria) where students can learn and experience African wildlife conservation practices hands-on.
