Public Lecture: “New Materials for the 21st Century” at UWI

Event Date(s): 15/11/2012

Location: Noor Hassanali Auditorium, UWI St. Augustine Campus.

The Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Science Technology at the University of the West Indies (UWI) St. Augustine, in association with CARISCIENCE, a network of research and development and Postgraduate Programmes in the Basic Sciences in the Caribbean supported by UNESCO, invites all faculty, staff, students and the public to a lecture entitled “New Materials for the 21st Century” on Thursday 15th November 2012 from 5.30pm at the Noor Hassanali Auditorium, the UWI St. Augustine Campus.

Professor Anthony K. Cheetham will deliver the keynote address examining some of the major challenges that confront us in the 21st century that require developments in new materials. These challenges include increasing population and the concomitant energy demands, global warming, sustainable food and water supplies, security, and affordable healthcare. Professor Cheetham, a Goldsmiths' Professor of Materials Science in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge, UK, will also explore a number of key areas where materials science is expected to play an important role, such as solar energy, rechargeable lithium batteries, fuel cells and LED lighting.

This lecture forms a part of Professor Cheetham’s university-wide visit to the three Departments of Chemistry at the Mona, Cave Hill and St. Augustine Campuses. His outstanding research in Materials Chemistry puts him at the forefront of research and development in this field of science and technology. His contribution to the field is evidenced by well over 500 publications in numerous peer-reviewed international journals and many awards received including, the Corday-Morgan Medal and Prize of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), Solid State Chemistry Award of the Royal Society, Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS), and more recently the RSC Nyholm Prize for Inorganic Chemistry. In November 2012 he will become the Treasurer and Vice-President of the Royal Society.
