The Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of the West Indies (UWI) St. Augustine presents “Breaking the Silence: Building Effective Responses for Adolescent Suicide Prevention,” a series Adolescent Suicide Prevention Workshops, for professionals/counsellors, teachers and parents, from November 20th to 22nd at the Faculty of Social Sciences Lounge, UWI St. Augustine Campus.
The schedule is as follows:
· November 20th from 9am-4pm: For Professionals/Counsellors
· November 21st from 9am-4pm: For Teachers/ Educators
· November 22nd from 9am-4pm: For Parents
Coordinated by Dr. Linda Hadeed, lecturer in Social Work and Mediation at The UWI, this series of workshops is designed as a first step in building a necessary public framework among clinicians, educators and parents and set them toward working together for the common goal of saving adolescent lives. It will cover the warning signs and risk factors for suicide; protective factors and resiliency; the role of teachers in helping to prevent suicide; strategies for counsellors working with teens at risk for suicide and skills for parents to support and help teens at risk.
The workshop will be facilitated by Mr. Michael McFarland. McFarland is the Director of Psychological Services, Florida National Guard and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) for over 10 years. He also served as the Director of Psychological Health for the Kentucky National Guard and was the State Coordinator for Suicide Prevention in the Kentucky Department of Behavioural Health. McFarland conducts both clinical and community based Suicide Prevention trainings throughout the United States.
The seminars cost TT$1500.00 per day, which covers lunch, coffee breaks and all training materials.
