Conference Theme: Agribusiness Essential for Food Security: Empowering Youth and Enhancing Quality Products

The Caribbean Agro-Economic Society was formally launched on April 8, 1974 at the Ninth West Indies Agricultural Economics Conference in Jamaica. The major activity of the Society has been the organization of the West Indies Agricultural Economics Conferences. This conference series began in February 1966 at the then Department of Agricultural Economics and Farm Management, University of the West Indies St Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago.

This year, the conference, held jointly by the University of the West Indies St. Augustine Campus, the Caribbean Food Crops Society (CFCS) and International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS) will be held from 30th June to July 6th, 2013 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad.

The need for increased food security has put the emphasis on an agribusiness approach which needs to be developed in a sustainable manner to mitigate the global challenges associated with food and economic crises and increasing food prices. Several problems therefore have to be addressed:

- Approaches for enhancing food quality and safety throughout the food chain for food security;

- The approaches to be used for sustainable agribusiness e.g. value chain analysis and agro tourism;

- The risks associated with food production and agricultural development which contribute to price volatility and food insecurity;

- Relevant methods for empowering youth with agribusiness essentials for food security

- Appropriate mechanisms for addressing the global impact of food and nutrition insecurity

- Tertiary education and training for food and nutrition security.
