Visit of the Mewasi Dance Troupe

On the occasion of Holi/Phagwa and Easter The Mewasi Dance Troupe from India is visiting Trinidad & Tobago from 25- 30 March courtesy the Indian High Commission, under the auspices of The Ministry of Arts & Multiculturalism. They will visit our campus for a special performance on March 28, 2013. Mewasi is a tribal dance of Gujarat performed by the Bhills at engagement ceremonies. The dancers are attired in traditional clothes with women adorned in beautiful ornaments like lodiya, hasli, hiriya, kala and pageradi while the men tie pagdis (turban) with peacock feathers tucked in them.

Led by Shri Bachubhai Vasava, the performances will include:

Rathava Tribal Dance: Rathava community from North-East region of Gujarat performs Rathava Aadivasi Dance.

Dangi Tribal Dance: This fast and energetic dance performance is originated from Dang- a small region of Southern Gujarat. Dangi male and female performers dance together during the occasion of Holi Festival & marriage ceremony.

Mishra Dandia Raas: Dandia Raas, performed by male and female dancers with two small wooden sticks (Dandia) in their hand, is “Dand Rasak” type of dance which is one  of the three dance forms described in “Harivansh” - one part of “Mahabharata”. This dance is performed on songs praising Lord Krishna. However, folk songs are also commonly used.

Hudo Folk Dance: Hudo is very popular dance form in Gujarat which got fame and name from very famous “Tarnetar Fair” held every year in Surendranagar district of Saurashtra region of Gujarat State. This dance is mostly performed by Shepherd community.

The performance will take place at the Daaga Auditorium from 4pm. All are invited.

 

About the The Mewasi Dance Group

Mewasi has extensively performed in India (since 2002) on National Days and has also performed in Singapore (in 2009). This is their first visit to the Caribbean region. They will be performing in Montserrat, Trinidad and Grenada.
