How is Science Reshaping our Societies?

Event Date(s): 03/06/2013

Location: To Be Confirmed

Dr. Jason J. Blackstock, Deputy Director of the Centre for Engineering Policy at the University College London, will deliver a lecture, “How is Science Reshaping our Societies? Exploring the opportunities, challenges and governance of science and engineering within 21st century societies,” on Monday June 3, at The UWI.

In his talk, Dr Blackstock will answer such questions as:

- How can we expand our societies' abilities to use scientific and engineering knowledge and expertise?

- What mix of interdisciplinary expertise and advice do we need supporting our public (and private) policy and decision making communities?

- How can — and should — such knowledge and expertise integrate with and influence our local, national and international governance systems?

- What might this mean for the evolution of modern academic institutions?

- What implications will our answers have for the types of near and long term choices and futures available to our societies?

Using University College London's new Department of Science, Technology, Engineering and Public Policy (www.ucl.ac.uk/STEaPP) as a case-in-point, Dr Blackstock will also highlight the importance of problem-oriented research and teaching that draws from across academic disciplines (integrating the natural, engineering and social sciences, and the humanities) and engages with experienced real-world partners from government, corporate and civil society.
