iWeek: Knowledge Without Borders

Event Date(s): 07/10/2013 - 11/10/2013

Location: Various

The concept of International Week has been used by a number of universities to make their diverse student population aware of each other. According to studies carried out by cultural anthropologists, events and activities contained in the International Week “help bind groups, promote social unity and confirm cultural morals world views as well as enhance ethnic pride and identity” (Bolin and Dunstan 1985). Universities such as George Mason University and University of Alberta successfully stage International Week events and have made it signature features on their respective campus calendars.

The UWI International Week (iWeek) aims to:

- resolve the tendency towards insular thinking in the Caribbean region.

- improve sensitivity to, and appreciation of, other cultures in students and the general public

- show students of The UWI, St. Augustine, and the wider public, the opportunities for international experiences that are open to them through departments such as the Office of Institutional Advancement and Internationalisation (OIAI), and the Centre for Language Learning (CLL)

- foster research and curriculum development with global impact

iWeek launches with the purpose of inculcating global culture and a sense of global citizenship through interactive workshops, lectures and panel discussions, as well as various movies and documentaries that will expose individuals to the ways of life in different cultures.

The iWeek events encompass issues related to foreign affairs, academic development, social responsibility, gender awareness, and technology. it is one arm of the OIAI’s thrust to integrate international, intercultural and global dimensions into all aspects of The UWI. iWeek will feature round-table and panel discussions, a foreign-film festival, a student-exchange fair, foreign language speed-dating, and much more!
