The University of the West Indies hosts a Professorial Inaugural Lecture presented by Professor Anderson Maxwell titled "One Small Step or One Giant Leap? Exploring the Potential of Nature’s Chemical Factories."

The lecture will be held at Lecture Theatre 1, Block 13, Faculty of Engineering from 5:30pm.

Our local and regional flora and fauna constitute a potentially rich source of chemical compounds, so- called natural products, which can contribute in a major way to the enhancement of the economic and social wellbeing of the people of Trinidad and Tobago and the region. The lecture will give an overview of the impact of natural products on human life over the centuries, discuss the work done at The UWI, St. Augustine by the presenter and his collaborators and indicate a way forward to sustainable exploitation of this rich natural resource, our biodiversity, to provide valuable products which would positively impact our health and nutrition, agriculture and the economy as a whole.
