The Psychiatry Unit presents: Alcohol Update 2013

The Psychiatry Unit, Faculty of Medical Sciences, through the Integrated Interdisciplinary Drug Demand Reduction (IIDDR) Project presents Alcohol Update 2013, a series of seminars meant to educate persons about the effects of alcohol use, alcohol misuse and addiction. Alcohol Update 2013 takes place from November 26-28, 2013, 8.30am-3.30pm daily, at Room 202, First floor, New Building, School of Education.

 

Come and hear discussions on:

Why do people start to drink? What is safe drinking? Why do some persons become alcoholic and some don't? What exactly is an alcoholic? Is alcohol good for the heart, or all bad? And how are the children affected when the parents drink?

November 26 – 27, 2013: open to the public

November 28, 2013:  open to Faculty and Post-grad students

Registration begins at 8.30am. Seminars begin at 9am.                                                                                  

Space is limited; therefore registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

SEMINAR DETAILS

Six seminars will present culturally relevant and up-to-date information on the medical effects of alcohol use, youth and alcohol, prevention of alcohol use problems, understanding the nature of alcoholism, children of alcoholics and the approach to helping an alcoholic.  The series ends with an all day workshop on alcohol research methodologies for faculty members and postgraduate students interested in conducting alcohol and drug research.

Alcohol Update 2013 offers something for everyone:

Faculty, come and see how you can promote harm-free drinking by including relevant facts in your lectures.

Parents, come and understand how and why alcohol problems develop.

Family members, do you think that your child or spouse or parent drinks too much? Come and learn the signs and impact of harmful drinking.

Researchers, get started in alcohol and drug research.

Students, need facts for your papers and projects?

Lunch is provided for those attending all sessions. Pre-registration is requested in order to ensure enough lunches are available.
