The Secret Epidemic: STIs on Campus

The most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) for teens and young adults are human papillomavirus (HPV), herpes, molluscum contagiosum and chlamydia. STIs are spread via contact with bodily fluids; however, HPV, herpes and molluscum can also be transmitted merely by contact with infected skin. Many of these infections can be present with no symptoms at all. Additionally, condoms do not provide complete protection since they do not cover all infected areas of the skin.

Having an STI can increase the possibility of contracting HIV. In order to protect oneself, one should abstain from interaction with skin/fluids that may harbor viruses or bacteria that cause STIs. One should also avoid sharing underwear/swimwear and refrain from drinking alcohol or taking drugs.

Sexually transmitted infections can be detected via blood tests, visual examination, or testing genital secretions/urine. Women who have had sexual contact should have yearly Pap smear exams conducted. If you think you have an STI, visit a health care provider and be honest with him/her about your sexual history.

More about the S2 Seminar Series

The S2 Seminar Series is an initiative of the Office of the Deputy Principal and Student Services Units on the campus. The objective of the seminar series is to provide an avenue for student services professionals at all levels and other staff to present research and highlight issues related to Student services, the student experience and student development.

The format of the seminar series provides a forum for discussion and the sharing of research, ideas and experiences that will enable participants to gain additional knowledge that can be used to enhance initiatives and programmes related to student services and development. This could be taken from ongoing research or published work. This programme aims to strengthen and professionalize student services and enhance campus commitment to student development.

Presenters for the S2 Seminar Series include staff of the various Student Services units as well as academics and professionals from all other departments or units dealing with students.  As such, managers and staff are asked to indicate their willingness to be part of this initiative.
