Sociology Unit’s Conference on Poverty and Opportunity

The Faculty of Social Sciences, Sociology Unit presents the Sociology Unit’s Conference on Poverty and Opportunity.
 
This event takes place from 9am to 4.30pm. Registration will take place on the day from 8-9am.  The featured speaker for the conference is Gregory Aboud. 
 
The conference will examine the phenomenon of poverty and possible avenues for creating opportunities for persons to get themselves out of poverty. The Sociology Unit over the years has provided a platform for academics, students and practitioners to showcase their interests and skills. The general public looks forward to these conferences as they identify phenomena with a view to finding a solution. This year is no different as the conference will provide the participants the opportunity to find solution-based initiatives. 
 
Registration Fees are as followed:
General public and UWI staff - $60
UWI Students (with ID): $20
Secondary schools: 5 students free; additional students $10
 
Themes include:
- The Anatomy of Poverty, which will aim to answer questions such as why does poverty exist? What are the consequences and challenges (social, economic and political, the fear of “stepping out’) of poverty? And, how can the cycle of poverty be broken?
 
-Templates for creating Opportunities for getting out of poverty: Public sector and private sector perspective, which highlight some of the avenues available to persons to create opportunities to take themselves out of poverty. Registration will take place from 8:00 to 8:50 am on the day of the conference. 
 
Persons interested in attending the conference can pre-register at the Sociology Unit’s weekly Open Forum which is held every Thursday from 1.30-3.30pm at the Faculty of Social Sciences, FSS 101 East and West.
