The Department of History, UWI, St. Augustine in collaboration with the Indian High Commission to Trinidad and Tobago presents A Public Lecture and Cultural Evening – “Girmit: Journeys and Transformations” featuring Prof. Brij V. Lal, Professor of History and Member of Parliament, Fiji.
This event takes place at 6pm.

This public lecture is part of “The Indian Diaspora: Identities, Trajectories and Transnationalites” Conference Commemorating the 170th Anniversary of Indian Arrival in Trinidad and Tobago which takes place from May 12-16.

Brij V Lal is Professor of Pacific and Asian History at The Australian National University where he has taught since 1990 after almost 10 years at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. He is well known for his work on the history and politics of Fiji and the history and culture of the Indian indentured diaspora. His many books include 'Broken Waves: A history of the Fiji Islands in the 20th century,' Chalo Jahaji: On a journey of indenture in Fiji,' and, as general editor, 'The Encyclopaedia of the Indian Diaspora.' Among his many awards are the Centenary Medal of Federation for his distinguished contribution to the Humanities in Australia and the Fellowship of the Australian Humanities Academy.
