The Institute for Gender Development Studies (IGDS) presents a lunchtime seminar on the topic “Transitioning from Bai (courtesan) to Devi (respectable woman): Narrativizing Dance as a Female Profession in Hindi Cinema of the 1950s and 1960s” with Dr. Usha Iyer.
This event takes place on Wednesday, April 29 from noon to 1.30pm at the IGDS Seminar Room.
Usha Iyer is Lecturer of Film at The UWI, St. Augustine Campus. She received her PhD from the University of Pittsburgh. Her dissertation focuses on iconic dancer-actresses from the 1930s to the 1990s to examine the role of dance in the construction of female stardom. Her essays have appeared and are forthcoming in the volumes Figurations in Indian Film and Movies, Moves and Music: The Sonic World of Dance Films respectively. She has a forthcoming essay on the dancer-actress Madhuri Dixit in the feminist film journal, Camera Obscura.
