About the Seminar:

This study examines the existence of authentic leadership in Caribbean business and whether there is a difference in ascendance to authentic leadership development between men and women. The research focuses on three high and upper-middle income Caribbean countries for which the best scores were reported in the Global Gender Gap Report 2011 – Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and Jamaica. Authentic Leadership is defined “as a pattern of leader behaviour that draws upon and promotes both positive psychological capacities and a positive ethical climate, to foster greater self awareness, an internalised moral perspective, balanced processing of information, and relational transparency on the part of leaders working with followers, fostering positive self development” (Walumbwa et al., 2008). This Study will be the first on Gender and Authentic Leadership. The intended final outcomes include: (1) Identification of the existence of authentic leadership in the Caribbean (2) What are the qualities of Caribbean men and of women that are required for success as authentic leaders in Caribbean business and (3) The provision of evidence of whether the leadership qualities are different for female Caribbean leaders versus male leaders.

About the Speaker:

Jennifer Jones-Morales is a PhD candidate in Business Administration with specialization in Human Resources Management. Her dissertation is entitled “The Impact of Gender on Authentic Leadership in Caribbean Business.” She worked on her thesis under the supervision of Prof. Alison M. Konrad, Richard Ivey School of Business, Western Univ, London, Ontario, Canada. She has a BSc Management Studies (Upper Second Class Honours) The UWI. She received a CANADA/CARICOM Scholarship to pursue her Masters in Business Administration at the Richard Ivey School of Business and has attended many training programmes overseas (Harvard Business School, Cornell University, Wayne State University (Detroit)). She has a wealth of experience from both the public and private sectors. In the Public Service, she worked as an Organization and Management Officer, a Research Officer in the Ministry of the Economy and a Business Analyst in the Ministry of Finance (Investments Division). She also worked as an Account Executive and later as an Assistant Branch Manager at Royal Bank. She is currently employed with the International Labour Organization (Decent Work Team and Office for the Caribbean) for the last 16 years, as a National Officer, Finance, Personnel and Administration, with responsibility for Security matters. She has lectured at YTEPP, NIHERST, Institute of Business (now the Arthur Lok Jack School of Business) and The UWI. Ms. Jones-Morales has a deep interest in gender, women and leadership.
