Abstract
Within the apicomplexan family Theileriidae, only Theileria equi is present in Trinidad and considered endemic. Still, with the increase in animal movement and interaction between domestic and wildlife species, this could change. A recent example would be the T. equi outbreaks in the United States, or the emergence a few decades ago of Cytauxzoon felis in the southeastern United States. Also, new technological advances have led to the discovery of new species of Theileria and Cytauxzoon, and have increased our understanding of the “classic” species. The aim of this seminar is to provide an overview of four main known species (T. equi, T. parva, T. annulata, C. felis), focusing on life cycles, pathogenesis, and diagnosis.
