Abstract

People in the Caribbean live in environments with increasing vulnerability to climate change.  This is due to higher temperature, rise in sea levels and higher hurricane intensity that threaten lives, prosperity and livelihoods throughout the region. Taking the scientific issues as our point of departure, the focus of this engagement will be on the policies and programmes to achieve a sustainable future for the Caribbean. In this regard the questions revolve around: What are the priorities? Who are the primary actors? How are the game changers to be identified, adopted and implemented? Where is the funding for adaptation and mitigation to come from?

Innovation, activism and partnership are among the responses to the challenges. Yet opportunities within our grasp are provided in the Paris Declarations on climate change adopted by the UN General Assembly in March 2016 and the implementation of its elements through functional cooperation, institutional strengthening and capacity building at regional level. In the final analysis measuring success will be judged by how the investments in climate change make a difference to the lives of the people of the region.
