LCCS, Carnival Studies One-Day Symposium & Public Lecture

Location: March 2: Goverment Campus Plaza; March 3: Daaga Auditorium, UWI St. Augustine


The Department of Literary Cultural and Communication Studies (LCCS), Cultural Studies Section will be hosting a one-day symposium titled, Memory, Politics and Performance in the Trinidad Carnival Complex. There will be a keynote lecture and discussion by Dr. Keith Nurse of UWI Cave Hill on the topic, Bacchanalia and the Political Economy of Governance in the T&T Carnival.

The symposium takes place as follows:

  • March 2 | 6 to 8pm – Keynote lecture and discussion on at the Government Campus Plaza, Richmond St, Port-of-Spain.
  • March 3 | 9 to 5pm – All-day symposium with panel discussions at Daaga Auditorium. Panel discussions will embrace topics such as Carnival, Politics and Identity; Gender Performativity and Sexuality in Carnival; Pedagogical Approaches to Carnival Arts Performance; and Carnival and Memory.

Both events are free and open to students and the public.
