The Open Lectures Committee presents the Distinguished Open Lecture by Nell Watson –engineer, entrepreneur, and futurist on the topic, Artificial Intelligence and Educating for Tomorrow.  

The lecture takes place on April 6 at 6pm at Lecture Theatre D, Teaching and Learning Complex.

Abstract

Machine Intelligence is an incredible new utility that our society can tap into at will, in a revolution that we haven't seen since electrification. Every sector of our economy is being affected by this change, and grasp how big data is driving this process. How can we make the most of these capabilities, and ensure that the spirit and wisdom of the human isn't lost in a sea of cold algorithms? Education will be shaped by these questions, by the new needs of tomorrow's students, and by technology within the space itself. This talk will discuss how we can prepare ourselves to be ahead of the curve, to leapfrog in readiness ahead of the 2020s.

About Nell Watson

Nell Watson FBCS, FIAP, FRSA, FLS, FRSS, CITP is an engineer, entrepreneur, and futurist thinker who grew up in Northern Ireland. She has a longstanding interest in the philosophy of technology, and how extensions of human capacity drive emerging social trends.  Her ability to bridge the world of technology and the Humanities makes it easy for her to translate complex subjects so that they can be clearly understood.In 2010 Nell founded Poikos, a machine learning-driven ‘AI for for body measurement’. Nell’s patented technology ‘dematerialises’ the 3D body scanner, by providing accurate 3D scans of the body with only 2D camera hardware, such as that found within smartphones, or laptops. This may then be applied to a range of markets, such as mass customisation, and health. She is also Co-Founder of EthicsNet.com, a machine ethics dataset that aims to crowdsource ethical heuristics for autonomous systems. Nell lectures globally on Machine Intelligence, AI philosophy, Human-Machine relations, and the Future of Human Society, serving on the Faculty of AI & Robotics at Singularity University.
