Abstract

The concept of sustainable development is one of the current buzzwords within the global development discourse. In 2015 the United Nations approved a 2030 Development Agenda "Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development", thereby replacing the Millennium Development Goals. This narrative of this agenda speaks of an end to poverty in all forms and the sustainable use of resources. Governments, NGOs and global financial organisations have incorporated this concept into their policy frameworks. This presentation looks at the evolution of development thought and practice in Trinidad and Tobago starting with the implementation of the ideas of the Sir Arthur Lewis. In a context where the Caribbean faces the threats of climate change, species collapse and the destruction of natural spaces, this presentation seeks to use the lessons of local development experiences to interrogate the theory and practice of sustainable development.
