The UWI Blood Donor Foundation’s 21st blood drive

Event Date(s): 28/08/2021

The UWI Blood Donor Foundation will be hosting a blood drive on Saturday, August 28  from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex. At the last blood drive, the Foundation succeeded in collecting 47 voluntary pints of blood and would also like the upcoming blood drive to be a success.

To follow the social distancing guidelines, blood donations will be done at two locations on the compound of the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex: 1) The blood bank 2) A mobile blood unit next to the school of dentistry

This will be a PURELY VOLUNTARY blood drive, which has tremendous benefits. Your blood donation can help save the lives of people who need blood transfusions.

You may be familiar with the usual requirements:

  • Weight 110 pounds, no recent viral infection
  • No recent travel to malarial countries or countries in South, Central or Latin America
  • Tattoos and piercings must be over a year old
  • No recent dental extractions

but some additional regulations will apply because of COVID-19:

  1. Donors who have tested positive for or have had symptoms suggestive of COVID-19 or have a history of travel to an affected country in the past 28 days should not donate.
  2. Donors must strictly follow appointments to allow a smooth flow and maintenance of social isolation guidelines. Make an appointment using the following link: https://forms.gle/fVMaEScQXomFR3zD9
  3. Donors should arrive as close to their appointment as possible to avoid congestion.
  4. Donors should leave as soon as possible after donation and rehydration to prevent crowding.
  5. Donors should report the occurrence of any symptoms consistent with COVID-19 or a positive COVID-19 test that occur within 28 days ater donation.
  6. Donors who received the COVID-19 vaccine will be eligible to donate once they are well.
  7. Donors should not donate more than twice per year for females and 3 times per year for males.

COVID-19 is not spread by blood donation or transfusion.

Please note that facilities will be in place to allow hand-sanitization and facilitate social distancing.
