The Department of Chemistry in conjunction with the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Training and Technology Transfer for the Caribbean (BCRC-Caribbean), TAUW bv and the Solid Waste Management Company Limited, invites you to an online public lecture entitled “Innovative approaches for detection of microplastics in sediments and nature-based solutions to limit the impacts of the landfill on the Swamp – the case study of the Beetham Landfill” on Tuesday, April 26 2022 at 4 p.m.

The featured speakers, Guido van de Coterlet and Ilona van der Kroef, are consultants at TAUW bv who are spearheading a new project to assess the impact of the Beetham Landfill on the Caroni Swamp, with specific attention given to the impact from the leachate and microplastics generated at the landfill. In addition, the project will develop a conceptual nature-based solution for limiting any future impact on the swamp.  They will share their experiences and intended outcomes of the project in the lecture.

Remarks will also be delivered by Ms. Jewel Batchasingh, Director, BCRC-Caribbean and Mr. Kevin Thompson, Chief Executive Officer, SWMCOL.
