Counteracting the Scourge of Violence Against Women in Caribbean Societies

Event Date(s): 29/07/2022

The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) presents Counteracting the Scourge of Violence Against Women in Caribbean Societies – Towards Remedial Action in Response to Theory and Evidence-Informed Studies on Friday July 29 at 10 a.m.. Violence against women and girls is a scourge that requires an unrelenting and continuous movement to advocate for progressive changes in the lives of women and girls.  Despite the overwhelming show of solidarity favouring victims of violence meted out to women and girls, there is a need to come to terms with new knowledge and new remedies that can expand the arsenal of arms needed to overcome the scourge and begin the healing process. This session is an open forum for reflecting, contesting and reforming agendas and action geared towards violence prevention and safety promotion among women and girls at risk of intra-familial and community violence.

It aims to stimulate discussion and action that is informed by Caribbean ontologies and epistemologies that frame knowledge in gendered discourses and their implications for understanding and responding to the scourge that presents itself in the form of violence against women and girls. It will reflect upon ethical pre-requirements and prescriptions as they relate to research on violence against women especially in the context of thrusts towards promotion of valid standards and the dissemination of valid data and findings used to frame information about violence against women and girls in the Caribbean. This engaging webinar will showcase recent evidence-based studies that permit assessments of situation and change in the context of myriad issues akin to violence against women and girls in Caribbean jurisdictions.
