“Leave NO ONE Behind”: Caribbean Reflections on World Food Day 2022

Event Date(s): 10/11/2022

A cross-faculty collaboration between the Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Medical Sciences, and the Faculty of Food and Agriculture presents “Leave NO ONE Behind”: Caribbean Reflections on World Food Day 2022; Agriculture, Health and Social Vulnerability. To mark World Food Day 2022 with the theme, ‘Leave No One Behind,’ this interactive, multidisciplinary webinar invites members of the public, especially farmers, researchers, practitioners, and policy makers to a conversation on agriculture, health, nutrition and social vulnerability in the Caribbean. The webinar will illustrate how agricultural, medical and sociological analyses of food systems from various sector-specific perspectives can promote more equitable food secure systems in the Caribbean. While food insecurity pre-dates the Covid-19 pandemic, putting food on the table is a more acute concern within the pandemic and a post-Covid era (if there is such a bounded categorization).

Invited panellists from academia, civil society, farming, development and government will guide this discussion by drawing specific attention to the vulnerability of groups to food insecurity as well as identifying policies, and programmatic initiatives to positively address this social vulnerability. Groups that are more acutely susceptible or at risk for food insecurity, poor nutrition and cascading effects include, inter alia, the working poor, the poor, unemployed and underemployed, women, indigenous groups and youths.

The webinar encourages positive, cross-faculty collaboration between the Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Medical Sciences, and the Faculty of Food and Agriculture, highlighting the importance of considering social and cultural perspectives to address Agriculture, Health and Social Vulnerability from multiple perspectives. The event may also provide a springboard for a wider engagement within The UWI regarding these interconnections.
