Event

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Faculty of Science and Technologywill be hosting The UWI Math Fair 2023: Unleashing the Mathlete in You on Thursday, February 9, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the JFK Auditorium. The UWI Math Fair is an event held annually at the St Augustine Campus. The UWI would like to cordially invite all secondary school students and teachers to this event.

The main objectives are to: 

• spark enthusiasm for the various applications of Mathematics in real life  
• allow students to view Mathematics in an exciting way, using various puzzles and logic games to increase interest in the field, and  
• highlight the various programmes and research opportunities available at the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), UWI, St. Augustine. 

The theme for this year’s event is “”.

There will be a multitude of activities, puzzles and brain teasers to attract students and promote enthusiasm for the field of Mathematics. 

The event will consist of both preliminary and on-the-day activities and there would be a multitude of competitions to encourage Mathematics creativity and problem-solving. Our fair will culminate with the crowning of the UWI Math Fair Challenge Winner, awarded to the secondary school with the top overall performance. 

Prior to the event date, several competitions are being held. These include the:  

Math Olympics:   

• Math Quiz (an online quiz)
• Math Feud (an in-person competition between two teams of Math Quiz winners) 

Math Creativity Challenge:  

•  Art, Craft and Design/Diorama Challenge;  
• Oral Expression/Musical or Spoken Piece ;  
• Meme/Cartoon Challenge  

Math Modelling Competition 

• Poster Competition;  
• Physical Model Competition  

Some of these events are open to both students and teachers. Special prizes and certificates will be awarded to the winners of the different competitions.
