Looking for New Transiting Extrasolar Planets

Event Date(s): 11/04/2008

The Department of Physics will host a Postgraduate Seminar presented by Ms. Sarah Calbio on Friday 11th April, 2008, the seminar, "Looking for New Transiting Extrasolar Planets" will be held in Room 413 from 1:30 p.m.

The following is the abstract:

To date the most productive means of detecting extrasolar planets is the radial velocity method. This method requires large telescopes and expensive equipment to conduct. However, it is unable to detect transiting planets which are scientifically the most useful class of extrasolar planets. This presentation outlines what makes transiting planets so important and gives details on a search for new transiting planets using the SATU telescope and data from OGLE survey.
