The UWI Arts Chorale and the UWI Arts Steel presents “Révérence”, a tribute concert on Sunday April 30, 6pm at the Church of the Assumption, Maraval. The event will be co-directed by Jessel Murray and Khion De Las; and will feature UWI Arts Chorale.

“Révérence”, the concert, will feature liturgical works by French composers and works that are inspired by French drama inclusive of operatic and musical theatre excerpts. The featured work for this event is the Gabriel Fauré Requiem which shall showcase the UWI Arts Steel and the UWI Arts Chorale. Jessel Murray, the conductor of the Requiem, remarked that “this Requiem is one of the great three, the other two being the Verdi and Mozart settings. It is an ideal sound for the acoustic at the Church of the Assumption and he believes that the composer would have approved of the colours of the Steel ensemble to accompany this choral masterwork”.

The UWI Arts community lost two of its founding members over the past three years. In 2020, Nervin "Teach" Saunders, the founding co-director of the UWI Arts Steel, passed away impacting on the steel pan fraternity.” Mr Saunders paved the way for many young musicians. His music and legacy will forever live on as his vision and legacy proudly lives on in The UWI ARTS Steel,” Sekou McGregor Captain of the UWI Arts Steel.

Music educator Evette Graham, who and the first President of the UWI Arts Chorale, passed away in 2021. She held the philosophy that everyone can learn, you just need to find out who they are and how to reach them. Current Chorale President, Melissa Jimenez says “We have had time to mourn the loss of Evette Graham, whose impact and legacy will continue to resonate with us for years to come. Now, we celebrate her memory which was one of kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment. Evette will be dearly missed by all who knew her.”

DCFA will pay homage to these members through this concert. This joint production of ““Révérence” promises to be a musical event to remember filled with emotional outreach and pore-raising music selections.
