Panel Discussion: Unpacking the Jason Jones Case

 On October 31, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. join the Faculty of Law in collaboration with the Department of Literary, Cultural and Communication Studies for a panel discussion at the Noor Hassanali Auditorium as they delve into the crucial theme of "Sexual Citizenship, Human Rights, & Legal Reform: Unpacking the Jason Jones Case."

The Jason Jones case stands as a landmark legal battle, addressing the constitutionality of laws that disproportionately affect sexually diverse individuals. With the case currently under appeal by the State, a pressing question arises: will the Court of Appeal overturn or affirm the initial decision?

The ramifications of this appeal are profound and extend far beyond the legal realm. Engaging in a high-level discussion on the impact of the Jason Jones case is of paramount importance to every Caribbean citizen. This event will bring together academics, practitioners, and activists to shed light on the regional and national issues surrounding the rights of sexually diverse individuals.

The event will be chaired by Dr. Alicia Elias-Roberts, Dean, Faculty of Law, moderated by Dr. Keith McNeal, Senior Lecturer, Department of Literary, Cultural and Communication Studies and panelists will include:

-         Mr. Peter Laverack, Human Rights Lawyer and LGBTQ+ Legal Strategist

-         Dr. Angelique Nixon, Senior Lecturer, IGDS, UWI-SA, and Director of CAISO

-         Mr. Kellog Nkemakolam, Programme & Research Officer, CAISO

-         Mrs. Ria Mohammed-Davidson, Attorney-at-law
