UWI Arts Steel presents Showcase: Dancing On Steel

Event Date(s): 15/09/2024

Location: Queen's Hall, Port-of-Spain

To close off their twentieth anniversary celebrations, The UWI Arts Steel presents Showcase: Dancing on Steel – A Live Recording for PASIC 2024. Jessel Murray, Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Creative and Festival Arts, will conduct Dr. Jeannine Remy’s celebrated work Dancing on Steel, performed with the UWI Arts Festival Dance Ensemble and augmented by guest performers. Happening on Sunday, September 15 at Queen’s Hall, from 6:00 p.m., this experience is tailored for audiences of all ages and continues the celebration of the steelpan as our national instrument.

Dancing on Steel was accepted as a 60-minute film to be screened at the prestigious Percussive Arts Society International Conference (PASIC) in November 2024, and the recording will be done at this performance. Patrons are invited to be a part of this historic production which also includes other original works for steel orchestra conducted by UWI Lecturer Khion De Las.

Dancing on Steel received its World premiere performance at the Naparima Bowl in May 2024 followed by its American premiere at the San Jacinto College in Texas in that same month. The work, a six-movement suite based on folkloric dances and themes from Trinidad and Tobago, has received rapturous approval by local and international audiences. The music composition of Dr. Remy, Senior Lecturer at The UWI and the choreography of Joanna Charles, Instructor in Dance at The UWI, has been acclaimed for its authentic portrayal of local themes with compelling storytelling. The work is a welcome addition to the canon of original works for steel ensemble.

Tickets are available at the Queen’s Hall and cost $200. Specially priced tickets, at $150, are available for UWI students and alumni at the Department of Creative and Festival Arts building at Cheesman Avenue, St. Augustine and from members of the participating ensembles.
