Event Description:

Women often make up the majority of urban populations in the Global South. The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs and UN Women emphasise that an estimated 70% of the world's female population resides in urban areas. However, the persistent trend of women living in slums and informal settlements reflects gender inequality (UNWomen, 2023). Urban space is the built expression of institutions, social norms, relationships, and narratives that shape specific worldviews and self-perceptions (Carrera & Castellaneta, 2023). For For instance, studies show significant differences in use of public spaces, sports fields, and skate parks, whose use is male-dominated (Sandström, Ericsson, & Hedvall, 2024). Women across urban and rural areas have inferior access to privatised modes of transport than men and are more likely to travel by walking and paratransit (Borker, 2024). Additionally, the physical and emotional impacts of colonialism have a big impact on how cities in the Caribbean are built and lived in today. The open guest lecture, with its invited guests, will delve into the pressing topics and explore the relationship between gender and planning.  We will engage in a debate about the role of urban planners in the development of urban and rural settlements for everyone.
