The University of the West Indies will host a Distinguished Open Lecture by Dr. Bryan Gould, former Vice-chancellor, University of Waikato, New Zealand and former Member of Parliament and Labour Shadow Cabinet, UK on Tuesday 27th May, 2008. Dr. Bryan Gould will present his lecture, “The Democracy Sham: How Globalisation Devalues your Vote” at the UWI Learning Resource Centre (LRC) from 5:30 p.m.

Abstract:

Successive governments in a number of countries around the world would have us believe that globalization is both inevitable and desirable and that it has produced better economic and societal outcomes than we would have otherwise seen. However, is this really the case? Dr. Bryan Gould explores both the dubious economic benefits of globalization and the serious erosion of the ability of voters to influence what their governments do.
