Professorial Inaugural Lecture by Professor Roger Hosein

Event Date(s): 24/04/2025

The UWI, St. Augustine Campus cordially invites you to attend the Professorial Inaugural Lecture by Professor Roger Hosein titled Fostering Economic Growth In The Bust Phase of the Boom-Bust Cycle at the Learning Resource Centre on Thursday April, 24 @ 6:00 p.m.

Professor Hosein will explore strategies to stimulate economic growth during the bust phase of Trinidad and Tobago’s boom-bust cycle. With the economy heavily reliant on energy exports, downturns typically trigger fiscal tightening, job losses and reduced private investment. His analysis underscores the need to stabilize key macroeconomic fundamentals while simultaneously advancing structural transformation to build long-term resilience.

Key recommendations include:

-Scaling up non-energy exports

-Enhancing tourism

-Deepening Agro-processing

-Strengthening the innovation ecosystem and SME financing

-Prudent management of energy rents—through sovereign savings and counter-cyclical spending

The presentation also explores the role of infrastructure, human capital and digitalization in spurring inclusive growth. Attention is given to managing inflation, foreign exchange shortages and social protection during downturns.
