The UWI St. Augustine Campus invites you to attend the Professorial Inaugural Lecture by Professor Bheshem Ramlal, Professor of Geospatial Information Engineering, on the topic: Advancing Geospatial Ecosystems Functionality to Address Caribbean Development Challenges. The lecture takes place on Tuesday, 15 May 2025, at 6 p.m. at the Learning Resource Centre.

Abstract: This lecture explores the importance of functional national geospatial ecosystems in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, with a focus on the Caribbean. It highlights the region's current low level of readiness due to factors like limited resources, infrastructure, policies, and leadership. The session will review geospatial ecosystems, recent technological advancements, and present an assessment of regional readiness. Key challenges and ongoing efforts to improve functionality will also be discussed.

 

Bio: Dr. Bheshem Ramlal is a Professor of Geospatial Information Engineering and has served as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering since October 1, 2023. His research focuses on spatial data infrastructures, geo-enablement of society, data quality, data sharing policies, and participatory decision support systems. He has authored numerous academic and professional publications and has served as a reviewer and organizing committee member for various regional and international conferences. Dr. Ramlal has also provided expert support for geospatial and mapping projects across national, regional, and international agencies. He has held several leadership roles within the University of the West Indies, professional bodies, and state organizations.
