The UWI, STA cordially invites you to attend the Professorial Inaugural Lecture by Professor Reisha Rafeek, professor of restorative dentistry, on Thursday, May 22, 2025 at the Teaching and Learning Complex, The UWI St. Augustine at 6.00 pm.
This lecture explores the focus of restorative dentistry, which involves repairing or replacing damaged or missing teeth to improve oral health, function, aesthetics and overall well-being. Causes of tooth damage include decay, wear, trauma and congenital defects. Common treatments include fillings, crowns, bridges, implants and root canals.
Professor Rafeek will present strategies for restoring dentition, supported by research on prevention, dental materials (e.g., composite resins, glass ionomer cements) and full mouth rehabilitation for tooth wear, particularly in the Trinidadian population. The use of advanced technologies like CAD/CAM and intraoral 3D scanners highlights a shift toward digital dentistry, enhancing precision and patient comfort.
Biography:
Professor Reisha Rafeek is an expert in restorative dentistry and dental education. She holds a BDS from the University of London and a Master’s with Distinction from UCL. At UWI, she advanced from Assistant Lecturer in 1994 to Professor in 2023.Her research covers dental materials, oral rehabilitation and the oral microbiome. She serves as Deputy Dean at UWI and holds several leadership and editorial roles.
