The Department of Life Sciences (UWI St Augustine) and the Trinidad and Tobago Field Naturalists’ Club (TTFNC) invite you to the 14th annual T&T Bioblitz, taking place 20–21 September 2025 at the Maracas Bay Community Centre. Participation is free of charge and open to all.

Format

-          Biodiversity Surveys: Midday Saturday to midday Sunday (volunteers welcome)

-          Outreach Display: Sunday 21 September, 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (open to the public, families encouraged to attend)

Objectives

-          Collect valuable data on local species, including threatened and endemic wildlife

-          Engage communities to better appreciate and protect local biodiversity

Why It Matters

The T&T Bioblitz is more than a 24-hour survey. It is a collaborative effort that strengthens science, education and community involvement.

-          For students and volunteers: hands-on training in biodiversity survey methods, mentorship from experienced scientists, and exposure to real-world conservation work.

-          For science and conservation: new discoveries are often made, including species not previously recorded in T&T, extended ranges for known species, and in some cases even species new to science. Findings are published locally and shared globally through the GBIF database.

-          For communities and schools: interactive displays, opportunities to engage with experts, and long-term partnerships that foster environmental awareness and stewardship.

-          For UWI and partners: the event showcases academic excellence, public engagement and regional leadership in biodiversity research and conservation.
