Location: YARA Auditorium, Arthur Lok Jack GSB
The Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business (GSB) will host a seminar entitled “The Ideas Forum - Cross-cultural Differences in Ethical Management: How Ethically Suspect Behaviour Differs across Societies” on Tuesday 15th July, 2008 at the YARA Auditorium, Arthur Lok Jack GSB from 9:00 a.m. This seminar is free and open to the general public.
Associate Professor at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Dr. Praveen Parboteeah, will be the guest speaker at this seminar.
Dr. Parboteeah will speak on International Management and how researchers have traditionally preferred to use culture as the primary explanation for cross-national differences in management related variables. However, recent research by Parboteeah and Cullen (2003) suggests that social institutions such as the educational system, the level of industrialisation and social inequality are also critical factors explaining cross-national phenomena. Building on this sociological tradition, he will discuss his recent work on cross-national differences in ethics.
Specifically, institutional anomie theory (Durkheim) will be used to show how theoretically selected factors explain why people in different nations have different justifications of ethically suspect behaviours. Moreover, Dr. Parboteeah will also relate some of the gaps of the above study and relate those to his recent work on religion. International Management scholars have neglected religion and the presentation will address some of these shortcomings by examining the link between religion and ethics. Implications for future research and practice will be discussed.
